Aquatap Plumbing - Officially Lead-free in 2023.

We're an early adopter of the tech that will be made to be a mandatory standard.

The National Construction Code has introduced a new limit for the amount of lead allowed in plumbing products used for drinking water. From September 1st 2025, copper alloy products containing more than 0.25% lead will no longer be allowed to be used in plumbing systems for drinking water.

This change comes as a result of health officials recommending reducing exposure to lead where possible. In addition, a 2018 report from Macquarie University confirmed that the drinking water in Australia is of high quality. But, there is a chance of lead leaching from copper alloy plumbing when in contact with drinking water.

While lead is a naturally occurring metal, it is toxic to humans when exposed to it. Exposure can be through consumption or breathing in contaminated materials such as old paints or petrol.

Contact with this hazardous material can cause serious health problems. Those at most risk are unborn babies, infants and children as they absorb more lead from exposure than adults and are still developing.

Long-term exposure to lead can result in learning difficulties, developmental issues and behavioural problems in children. In addition, it can cause nerve, kidney, blood pressure, fertility, behavioural and cognitive issues in adults.

Lead is commonly used in plumbing systems, particularly in older homes and buildings, because it is a durable and flexible material. However, as more research has been conducted on the dangers of lead exposure, there has been a push to eliminate lead from plumbing systems.

5 Reasons Why Your Drains May Be Blocked

These could be the reason you've got a blocked drain.

Is your toilet not flushing properly, or is your sink emptying slowly? These are all common symptoms of a blocked drain. This common issue can reoccur or worsen if not treated promptly.

While applying a band-aid fix such as drain cleaners may be easier, depending on the extent and cause of the block, they may not resolve the problem. Therefore, getting to the root of the problem is valuable to understand what is happening and prevent the same issue from reoccurring.

Here are some of the most common causes of drain blockages that you can keep an eye out for.

1. Food waste

Food waste, oils and fats are notorious for causing blocked drains. When washing dishes, it may be easier to rinse these down the sink, thinking that it won't matter, but it can end up blocking the pipes.

Foods such as rice and pasta swell when exposed to water, and when cooled, cooking fats solidify, resulting in a blockage. Minor blockages may be cleared with home remedies like hot water, bicarb soda or vinegar, but significant blockages may require professional help.

Additionally, consider using environmentally friendly options for food disposal, such as a compost bin.

2. Hair

One of the most common causes of a blocked pipe is hair. When enough hair is washed down the drain, it bands together and creates a mesh that traps soap slurry, shampoo and conditioner. Eventually, with enough time and repeated use, the pipe will become blocked, and your shower or bath may drain slower or back up.

This can be prevented by investing in a hair trap that goes over the drainage hole and can stop hair from being washed down the drain.

3. Leaves, dirt and sticks

If left unmaintained, garden debris will build up. Items like leaves, dirt and sticks can carry into outside drains with rain and create a jam.

Storms and increased wind can blow leaves into gutters, and grass or weeds can grow if left unattended for long periods.

And, if your gutters are clogged during heavy rains, the rainwater will be unable to clear away. This can lead to corrosion, leaks inside your home and other costly damages that your insurance might not cover.

We recommend having your gutters cleaned yearly and keeping your gardens well-maintained by removing leaves and other debris that can clog drains.

4. Toiletries, wipes or paper towel

It's a common misconception that wipes and paper towel can be flushed down the toilet. However, unlike toilet paper that disintegrates with water, these items are quite thick. Therefore if flushed down the toilet, they risk blocking pipes altogether.

As a rule of thumb, only the 3 P’s should be flushed down the toilet. These are Pee, Poo and toilet Paper. All other items, such as paper towel, wipes and sanitary items, etc., should be placed in a bin.

5. Tree roots

Tree roots are naturally attracted to water sources underground. If a pipe under your home has cracked, roots can worm their way in and expand the entry point, causing more and more damage as it goes unnoticed.

In addition, if points in the pipes are weak, tree roots can break through. The only way to be aware of this is to conduct regular inspections of the drainage system around your home. We recommend doing this at least every five years.

Some simple steps to take when you're faced with a Plumbing Emergency

With the festive season on our doorstep and family coming to stay, can you safely say that you know what to do in a plumbing emergency? If you’re even the slightest bit unsure, read on because nothing will ruin Christmas lunch faster than a backed-up toilet, flooded bathroom or burst pipe! At some point, every home will experience a plumbing emergency. Ensure you know what to do to minimise the damage and come out on top. Here are some things you can consider doing while waiting for the emergency plumber to come.

�� Shut off the water!

A leaking or burst pipe can lead to costly repairs if gone unnoticed. For example, they can result in water damage to the structure of your property and, eventually, mold. While we believe in preventative maintenance to avoid these issues, if you are caught off-guard, it’s OK! We can help.

Immediately turn off the water at the first sign of any leaking or flooding. Depending on the leak’s location, you may be able to isolate the water to certain fixtures. However, if the leak is heavy, we recommend turning the water off at the main to prevent further water from entering and causing additional damage. Generally, the water main is located on the water metre outside your property or on the boundary line.

As a side note, the pipes will still have water after the main water valve is turned off. Open taps outside to direct the water out of the property and avoid more damage.

�� Shut off the gas!

If you have concerns about a gas leak, immediately extinguish any naked flames and isolate the gas bottle or gas metre.

Next, move your family and pets outside and contact a plumber. Once a plumber is on the way, open all doors and windows to ventilate and ensure all lights are turned off. Gas leaks can quickly turn dangerous, so ensuring your and your family’s safety should be your number one priority.

�� Dial the plumber!

�� Manage small leaks

If you find a small leak, prevent further damage by trying to stop the water from leaking as best as possible. You can apply plumber’s tape, a handy toolbox item to keep around. If you’re caught off guard, however, a simple bucket under the leak to catch water will suffice until it’s able to be fixed by a licensed plumber.

✅ Check your water heater.

During a major emergency, turn off your water heater to avoid damage to the unit. We advise only turning the water heater off after the main has been turned off. If turned off before, there’s a risk of the unit bursting or overheating. Or if you have a gas water heater, turn the gas off first.

If you’re unsure if you should turn your water heater off, check with the emergency plumber.

❌ Avoid Using Chemicals

While store-bought chemicals can temporarily fix your drainage issues, they won’t solve the problem. It can be tempting to attempt to clear your blocked drains yourself, but the problem may still reoccur down the line.

By calling an expert, they will repair the problem and get to the bottom of what is causing the blockages. Knowing this will help prevent this from happening in future.

What’s A CCTV Test and Why You May Need One

The easy un-invasive way to check for any plumbing problems.

Keeping up to date with drain maintenance is something we can’t stress enough. Often, we adopt an out of sight, out of mind mentality, but this can lead to ignoring drain issues that can end up being costly. By conducting regular check-ups, we can identify any problems or blockages before they get worse. This is so important and can save you in the long run. If you have a leak or blockage, a CCTV test is one of the best ways to assess and locate the problem.

How does it work?

CCTV testing is a simple and effective way of diagnosing drain issues. The CCTV camera is sent down an open drain, and the camera then sends a live feed to a monitor so we can see exactly what’s happening underground. This type of testing allows us to non-invasively access drains, stormwater and sewerage pipes that are too dangerous or otherwise inaccessible.

What to expect

Step 1: Accessing the drains

When arriving on site, the plumbing technician will need to locate an access point to the drainage system. From here, the operator will feed the camera slowly into the access point and guide it through the pipelines.

Step 2: Monitoring and Examining

Once inserted into the pipework, a trained plumbing technician will monitor the live feed to detect any defects and irregularities. Some common problems CCTV testing can observe are: blockages from debris, corrosion, collapsed drains, leaks and burst pipes, tree roots growing into the pipework, misaligned or displaced joints and even animal infestation. If found, these findings will be noted, and photos will be taken to include in the following step.

Step 3: Reporting

Finally, the observations noted in the assessment stage will be compiled into a CCTV report for you to review with the photo evidence of the detected issues. With the concerns located, steps to remedy the problems can be planned and put into place to prevent further damage and get your plumbing back to functioning at 100%.

The alternative is excavating the site to find the issue, which can take time and become quite costly. Instead, CCTV testing is non-invasive and can accurately pinpoint the problem area. If there is one piece of advice we could give to every single aspiring homeowner, never fall in love with a property…

Until you’ve checked the plumbing.

Buying a home is a huge investment. The property you purchase needs to be more than within budget, in a good location and in your aesthetic.

Unfortunately, generic building inspections rarely examine the drains and plumbing to the extent required. While they check the sewer layout, this does not mean they have looked at the status of the hot water system, fixtures, water metre, pipes and water pressure.

Luckily, you can do many of the crucial plumping checks without a professional. Likewise, for the inspections you do need an expert for, Aquatap have your back.

1. Check the Hot Water System

Did you know hot water systems only last around 10 years? Don’t fall into the trap of inheriting a water system that is on its last leg of the 10th year. Check the hot water unit (which is typically found outside) and note the model number and serial number. While you’re there, you can also check for corrosion, like rust, as this can also impact the longevity of the system.

2. Turn On All the Taps

We mean all of them. Check the kitchen sink, dishwasher, shower, bathroom sinks, laundry, and any taps outside. We’ve heard countless horror stories where people move into their new property and the dishwasher is broken, the water pressure is abysmal, and the taps fall off, don’t close, won’t run warm, or emit a terrible smell. This is a relatively simple check that you can do without a professional and should do thoroughly when you inspect.

3. Flush the Toilets

Similar to the point above, you don’t want to move into a new house and find out (at the worst possible time) that your toilet doesn’t flush properly. Test the toilets by flushing them using both full and half flash and check that they empty and refill properly. Again, you don’t need an expert to do this, so you would be a fool to leave it off your ‘to check’ list.

4. Look for Signs of Water Damage

Water damage can range from moldy, cracked or discolored timber (think inside wardrobes, skirting boards), ceilings, floorboards or walls. Water damage can also be a strange smell in the air or pools of water on the balcony after it has rained. Don’t be shy about opening gutter grates and peering inside to see if residue water has stayed or dried up. Of course, the drier the inside of the drain, the better.

5. Request a Sewer Pipe Map

Once you have acquired the sewer pipe map of the property, scan the garden to see if there are any unusually green or healthy plants in comparison to those around them. If there are some glowing green plants and they are on the sewer line, chances are they are soaking up the benefits of a cracked or leaking pipe - buyer beware!

3 Ways to Keep your Drains Clear

Unfortunately clogged drains are a common problem amongst homeowners. There’s nothing worse than trying to wash your dishes in a sink that wont drain, or having a shower-turned bath… (we’ve all been there!)

Clogged drains are not only bad for your plumbing system, but can also have an effect your health (and not to mention, it can attract pests!). Here are 3 tips to keep your drains clear this Winter:

1. Don’t Pour Oils Down the Kitchen Sink

Ensure that you pour your fat and oil into an old drinks carton and throw it away, instead of pouring it down the drain.

We get it, it seems like the easiest way to get rid of the stuff, but don’t do it! The cold weather will make these substances set even faster, increasing the risk of calling out a plumber. Pouring hot water down your sink can help with grease build up by melting it, helping it pass through your drainage easier. If this still doesn’t help, try using some baking soda and white vinegar. And if all else fails - call a plumber!

2. Only Flush Objects Intended to be Flushed!

This may seem obvious, but keeping those hard-to-breakdown stuff OUT of your drains, is one of the simplest ways to keep your drains clear.

Examples of what not to flush or pour down your drains are:

Coffee grounds
Cat Litter
Eggshells
Grease, fat and oils
Produce Stickers
Paper Towels
Sanitary Napkins

Men’s Mental Health - Let’s Break the Taboo

Here at Aquatap, we make a conscious effort to break the taboo surrounding mental health. Sadly, more than five men die prematurely each hour in Australia due to potentially preventable circumstances. Mental health and depression have proven to be some of the biggest causes of this, with men three times more likely to commit suicide than women, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Seeing that our employees spend a majority of their time at work, it only makes sense to try to build and foster an environment that supports and encourages them to reach out when times are tough. Whether you’re a leader or team member, there are tangible actions you can take to help nurture this culture as well as to look after your own mental health.

In a 2019 Movember study, 58% of men reported that they think ‘society expects them to be emotionally strong and not show weakness in front of others’. As a trade Industry, with a majority of our workers being male, we want to fight this belief and prove that being open and talking about your problems is one of the healthiest things you can do.

Here at Aquatap, we work closely with New View Psychology in providing an Employee Assistance Program to further support employees as they see fit. It’s a completely anonymous and free way to talk some things through with a professional.

Wishing everyone safe holidays over this period

As the year comes to a close, we just want to thank everyone for their continuous support over the last 12 months. It’s been a long, challenging lap around the sun for many of us, but we’re over the moon with the results the year has brought!

Whilst it has been a hard year for all, we are so thankful to have been fortunate enough to keep working during the pandemic. The team has worked extremely hard over the past year, and are all very much looking forward to a well-deserved break.

Aqua Tap Plumbing wins Business of the Year award

Everyone at Aqua Tap Plumbing has reason to feel proud after being named the 2019 Business of the Year at the Wyndham City Business Excellence Awards.

Aqua Tap Plumbing appeared on the shortlist alongside Alex Fraser, All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies and Circus Fit Studio. However, Aqua Tap scooped the top prize after judges, who visited our Wyndham premises, saw how committed we were to the local economy. Not only is our workforce made up of 100% local staff, we also support local sports teams and charities, only use Wyndham based business advisors and make every effort to purchase local supplies.

‘…It is a company that is always looking at systems and processes to improve the way it does things. In fact, the entire business seems to have an insatiable thirst for continual improvement.’

Judge, 2019 City of Melton Business Excellence Awards

Another stand-out factor was, of course, our fantastic team of over 50. The icing on the cake was that Aqua Tap Plumbing also won the ‘Trade and Construction’ award which is a testament to the teams’ continued hard work and dedication. Our new trade centre, built to support and develop the team by arranging industry guest coaches and masterclasses also couldn’t fail to impress.

The judges who visited Aqua Tap said, “Aqua Tap has an excellent approach to staff support and training, including a very strong mental health program and is known within the industry, and region, as an employer of choice.”

Creating a positive environment within the new trade centre, where professional tradespeople and apprentices can learn and gain experience, is key to Director Anthony Pante’s vision. When he started the business back in 2002, he had three key focus points: providing quality work, building trusted relationships and, offering opportunities to develop apprentices’ knowledge and skills.

Since the announcement of the awards, held at Encore Events Centre Werribee on the 30th August, the Aqua Tap team has received many congratulatory notes, including one from Joanne Ryan, Member of Lalor.

Ms Ryan wrote, ‘Congratulations on the success of your business and on receiving the ‘Business of the Year and Trade and Construction’ award, which acknowledges your efforts and hard work over the past year.'

It is always terrific to see our local business being recognised for their initiatives and the contribution that they make to the local community.’

With the two awards proudly on display, we now turn our attention to continuing to deliver the high standard of services that earn't us the prestigious Business of the Year award.

Finally, the management team at Aqua Tap Plumbing would like to thank all its staff, customers, family, friends and the city of Wyndham for their continued support and for the role they each played in helping us to be named ‘2019 Business of the Year’.
