Aquatap Plumbing - Officially Lead-free in 2023.

jez jez • Mar 09, 2023

We're an early adopter of the tech that will be made to be a mandatory standard.

The National Construction Code has introduced a new limit for the amount of lead allowed in plumbing products used for drinking water. From September 1st 2025, copper alloy products containing more than 0.25% lead will no longer be allowed to be used in plumbing systems for drinking water.

This change comes as a result of health officials recommending reducing exposure to lead where possible. In addition, a 2018 report from Macquarie University confirmed that the drinking water in Australia is of high quality. But, there is a chance of lead leaching from copper alloy plumbing when in contact with drinking water.

While lead is a naturally occurring metal, it is toxic to humans when exposed to it. Exposure can be through consumption or breathing in contaminated materials such as old paints or petrol.

Contact with this hazardous material can cause serious health problems. Those at most risk are unborn babies, infants and children as they absorb more lead from exposure than adults and are still developing.

Long-term exposure to lead can result in learning difficulties, developmental issues and behavioural problems in children. In addition, it can cause nerve, kidney, blood pressure, fertility, behavioural and cognitive issues in adults.

Lead is commonly used in plumbing systems, particularly in older homes and buildings, because it is a durable and flexible material. However, as more research has been conducted on the dangers of lead exposure, there has been a push to eliminate lead from plumbing systems.

Through our relationship with Bentons Plumbing Supplies, we have made the move to a lead-free water system ahead of the 2025 mandate for all plumbing systems to be lead-free.

At Aqua Tap Plumbing, innovation is one of our prized company values. The safety and health of the community are at the forefront of our consideration to commit to this change sooner than the mandate. We value our community and consistently want to provide the best plumbing solutions possible while upholding our high standards of quality and care. That's why we have decided to move to lead-free plumbing systems sooner.

A lead-free plumbing system is a plumbing system that is designed to be free of lead-based materials. Lead-free plumbing systems typically use materials such as copper, brass, stainless steel, and plastic instead of lead-based materials.

Copper and brass are popular selections for pipes and fittings, as they are durable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to install. Alternatively, stainless steel is often used for appliances and fixtures, such as sinks and faucets. Plastic materials, such as PEX and CPVC, are also gaining popularity for use in plumbing systems as they are lightweight, easy to install, and resistant to corrosion.

If you are concerned about the presence of lead in your plumbing system, you can have your water tested by a professional plumber like Aqua Tap Plumbing to determine if any lead is present. If lead is found, you can opt to replace your pipes and fittings with alternative lead-free materials to ensure your drinking water is safe to consume and use. Always consult a licensed plumber or plumbing contractor for advice and guidance on the best lead-free plumbing solutions for your specific needs.
